"The FIRST Robotics Team of Pewaukee High School kicked off the season on Saturday, January 7, 2012, with the announcement of the theme for this year’s competitions, held locally at WCTC in Pewaukee. The announcement was broadcast to students nationwide by inventor, Dean Kamen, joined by former presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and other celebrities, including will.i.am, frontman of the “Black Eyed Peas.” Teams work through regional competitions with the goal of reaching the national championship, to be held April 25-28, 2012 in St. Louis, Missouri.
“FIRST,” and acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,” a non-profit organization founded in 1989 to inspire young people to become actively involved in science and technology. FIRST offers a variety of programs for students age 6 through 18. The programs reach hundreds of thousands of students in schools in every state of the nation, and many countries around the world. The organization also awards millions of dollars of college scholarships annually to deserving students in the field of science and technology.
This year, the teams will design and build a robot to participate in the 2012 game, “Rebound Rumble, a game played between two alliances of three teams each. Each alliance competes by trying to score as many basketballs in the hoops on the game field during the two-minute, fifteen-second match. At the kickoff, teams received information regarding the rules of the competition and a kit of parts, including motors, sensors, chassis hardware, transmissions, software packages, control systems and batteries, to begin their work.
